A major UK Property Group, with strong views on corporate responsibility. With a large porfolio of managed properties across central London, this client had responsibility for managing a considerable amount of waste generated by their tenants. Their aim: to be the ‘greenest’ property developer in London.What happened next:
With Nordic’s assistance, the majority of this client’s properties immediately adopted a policy of ‘no waste to landfill’. As well as minimising waste, anything non-recyclable was re-directed to a ‘waste to energy’ plant, that powers 65,000 homes in London, as an alternative to coal. The start of a journey, which turned every scrap of this client’s waste into a valuable, usable, resource - diverting thousands of tonnes away from landfill.
Together we devised, and implemented, a 12 month waste management system - simple to use and easy to promote amongst tenants. A two stream system for all buildings, one bin for mixed recyclables and one bin for general waste. Recyclable material such as newspapers, plastic bottes and cans were mixed together and separated off site using Nordic’s material recovery facility.
The Result:
- Client increased their Recycling from 40% to 90%
- New Recycling initiatives were introduced
- Landfill has been eliminated completely
- Source of energy
