Nordic Recycling took on the task of increasing recycling and diverting waste away from landfill for a large UK Media Group. This new client was recycling less than half their waste with the rest being sent to landfill.

A key innovation in eliminating the waste being sent to landfill was the ‘Waste to Energy’ (WtE) solution proposed by Nordic Recycling.  This scheme offered a green recovery solution to the client. Large compactor units on the main hub sites were diverted to WtE, instantly eliminating waste being sent to landfill to zero. As an alternative, energy was recovered from the waste at a local heat and power recovery facility.

The WtE scheme was introduced to our client at the same time as they adopted a new two bin system within all their offices. One for non-recyclable (wet) waste, and one for recyclable (dry) waste.

A new recovery solution was introduced by Nordic.  This complimented the client’s recycling process whilst diminishing further the amount of waste going to landfill. Nordic reconfigured the reporting of recycling stats into three categories; Recycling (sent for recycling), Recovery (waste to energy) and Landfill (sent to landfill).  This enabled client to monitor their waste streams effectively.

The Result:
  • Client increased their recycling and recovery from 40% to 90%
  • A huge range of new recycling was introduced – including flo tubes, batteries, hazardous, oil, paper, cardboard, metal cans, plastic bottles and wood
  • Landfill has been eliminated completely
  • General waste is now used as a vital source of energy
